Bird Boxes and Bug Hotels

Over the last few weeks Cubs have been building bird boxes and bug hotels as part of their DIY badge. There are a few other things that they will need to do to complete the badge and some of them involves a little bit of research. Akela asked the cubs last night to find out about where we should place the boxes and hotels in Llanilid woods and outside the scout hall. So, if you could ask your child to find out what direction they should face, how high off the ground they should be and what type of bird or bug they would expect to use the boxes. Also, one extra question is how close/far away should the bug boxes be from the bug hotels?

In a couple of weeks time we plan on installing the boxes in the woods, so children will need to meet us at Llanilid farm. They will need their wet weather clothing, which includes coat, waterproof trousers and boots. They will also need to bring a torch (a letter will be sent out next week with all the details).

*For the homework, please do not just print off a few pages from the RSPB, etc and not actually read through them. Questions will be asked, so they should know what is written down.
